Pointless Quilter

Piecing the Past Quilts- Stitchers had a block of the month a bit ago that I was gung ho to participate in.  I wanted to try the turn under with glue method and then small zig zag the pieces down.  After 5 blocks I just ran out of time so decided to piece with some blank squares and use some of the other blocks as machine quilting designs.  I machine quilted a feather of some type in each block and just scribbled around the other pieces.  It's all ready to hang in my room when I change to my blue/white theme.  

 And I've been getting back into cross stitching and here are some pieces I've finished stitching.  Haven't done the finish work on them yet.  Explain more later.

 I think I will start working on these Prairie Schooler ornaments from now on. 
These pumpkins were part of a set from Just Cross Stitch Magazine (an old one). This was also from Just Cross Stitch Magazine.  It's a Hands On design using Priscilla Blains chalk drawings.

This was a pattern (free by getting the clues weekly) from Piecing the Past Quilt.  This is the second one I've started through her blog, however I haven't finished the 1st one yet.  It was applique.  It's pinned and ready to quilt though.



I broke open another fat quarter pack for this one and I used 16 extra fat quarters for the back.  I also used the scraps for the border.  And if you can believe it, there was still some fat quarters left over.  Mostly the lighter colors.

After making my sister Beverly her placemats (as shown here) I had a bunch of the fall fabrics left over so I cut into rectangles and made 2 little table runners for my guilds annual boutique.

They are not exactly the same, they have different backing fabrics and different bindings.  One has pilgrim fabric and the other has a fall colored paisley with a striped binding. 

Due to the influence of my friends, I started cross stitching again.  I finished the stitching on this little Halloween/Fall pumpkin.

so much that when they ask me to make them something, I'm happy to do it for them.  I don't do it right of way of course, I'm usually in the middle of other projects.  But this month I decided to get these things done for them.  First my sister who lives in Texas needed a 100" white table runner.  Okay, all white?!?   I did make the back red so she can use it for Valentine, 4th of July and Christmas too.


There is a pattern.  I didn't want to do just a solid white.

Then my younger sister asked for some fall placemats.  After many back and forth pictures of ideas and fabrics, we decided on  a darker main fabric with this particular bunch of fabrics.  I really like them.  She asked for 8-10 but I ended up making 12.  I'm not quite done with all of them as I'm waiting for more fabric for the binding

Our guild has an annual challenge and this year the challenge theme was 'Shoes".  We were also given a piece of chalk and we had to use that color in our quilt.  My chalk was yellow.  There were some size requirements as well.  This is what I came up with.

The machine embroidery design is from Designs by JuJu and it is her Fancy Footwear Filled pack.  The border fabric was something I found on a shop hop and was just the perfect piece for the shoes.  The challenge isn't due until August so I'm ahead of the game!

The guild also has an annual mystery.  I participated again this year.  This too isn't due until August. 

I machine quilted with an all over feather and a feather border.  I wasn't sure I'd like it when I was making the monthly components, but once it was done, I kind of like it.

Don't even remember how I first heard of the Moda Blockheads block of the week program but I started it this year by breaking up a fat quarter pack of Hi-De-Ho from Me and My Sisters Designs (Moda fabrics) and went for it.  A nice lady from New York sent me some more fabrics when I realized that some of the blocks were so big and I wouldn't have enough big pieces to complete using the fabric line.  And then after a few blocks I decided to use the background color white more to have some continuity. 

I really love the spring, happy, cheerful colors.  I machine quilted it myself by marking all those fans 1st (took 3 lunch hours and a few hours at home to mark) then free motioned the quilt.  I love the texture of the fans but boy that was a lot of work. 

I also finished this little table topper using the HST left over from my heart quilt I made in February.  This will be donated to our guild's boutique.

I was asked to make a wedding quilt for a lady I work with.  I was thinking this can't be so bad and will add a couple extra bucks in my pocket.  I'm going to quilt anyway, might as well right?  Well I'm glad I did it for her but it's something I really don't ever want to do again.  The stress of picking the right patterns, fabrics and then when it's done, will they like it? will they go like I can't believe I wasted my money on this.  Plus, she asked me to make a duvet cover instead of a quilt.  I have never made one before but I said sure.

 She did send me these paint chips so I at least had some direction to go with the color.  And I sent her a few quilt ideas and she chose this one.  This is the same pattern I made my youngest nephew for his graduation quilt.  The pattern is called Move Over which I bought through Connecting Threads years ago.

460 - 3" nine patches!  That's all it took to make this quilt.  That's a lot but I love this quilt.  Almost all the fabrics have metallic in it, hence the name Golden American Idol.  The pattern, Idol Results, is from the January-February 2013 Fon's & Porter magazine - the pattern designer is Mark Lipinski.  I started collecting these fabrics at the Houston International Quilt show six years ago.  It's just taken this long to get motivated to start it.  (I have a lot of those.)

Our local/regional quilt show Best of the Valley was this past weekend.  I won two ribbons!!!!  A second place for my Halo Medallion and an honorable mention on my Glamorous Twirly Balls quilt.  I entered my material girls challenge quilt but didn't get a ribbon on that.  I love reading the judges comments.  I see what they mean and will work on some of the things they suggest for next year. 

It was a nice show.  I didn't buy too much they had some nice vendors too.

Last month at guild I won 29 of these split 9 patch blocks.  I decided to quickly put a few together and make a charity quilt.  This is what I came up  I did have to re-do a couple blocks (1/4" too small) and I had to make 7 additional blocks.  Luckily it was scrappy and the red which was the square they gave us to make the blocks was an easy color for me to match in my stash. 

A co-worker's daughter is graduating high school this year and is taking a European trip this April so I decided to make her early graduation gifts.

A t-shirt in her favorite color.  Embroidering that was a bugger - it was a little too big for the shirt and I had hair clips to hold the shirt back (saw it on a tutorial) and they ended up blocking the movement - so the countries aren't actually 'finished'.  She also was talking to her mom about a back-pack and I said she needs to keep her money closer to her and she said she refuses to use a fanny pack so I made this little bag for her.

In April 2018 I took a Bonnie Hunter Class in Bakersfield.   It was a Jamestown Landing quilt - and I finally finished it this week.

I custom quilted it but you really can't tell in the photo.  I like how it turned out and can't wait to put it on my bed in the summer.  It takes a lot of half square triangles which I did a lot of them as leaders-enders.  I'm glad it's done.  I will be taking another Bonnie class this summer so another scrap buster coming up. 

I've also finished these other tops that I started in Cambria last month. 

A simple little baby quilt with Minkee backing --probably donate to our guild boutique.


I finished the heart quilt.  Did feather hearts in each heart and straight-lined quilting in the sashing area.   Kept it pretty simple and I finished it on Valentine's Day!!!

I'm still working on the Moda Blockheads 2 - here's a picture of the latest blocks. 
Just a couple more weeks and then all the blocks will be done.  I can't wait …

And things got made!

I finished quilting and binding my Good Fortune quilt.
This is my friend Janice Minyard's quilt next to mine.  Color makes the difference in the quilt.  Hard to tell they are the same.






I didn't leave the house much, but I did get out to see the elephant seals.  They were all there with their babies.
And we ate.  My friend Deo came for the last weekend and made a beautiful charcuterie array.
I hope we'll be able to do this again next year.  We might be selling the house so it may not be possible.  But if it's still ours, I will definitely do this again.
